My name is Jan Bailey, I am 50 years old. I have played sports in one form or another most of my life, but decided to take up running when I was 40. It all started with my local parkrun. I started out turning up on a Saturday morning and running the 5km. I really enjoyed it and liked the fact it was timed so being the competitive person I am I wanted to keep improving so I started to run once in the week and then again at the weekend to try and improve. This then led me to joining a local running club where my enjoyment for running grew.
After meeting some more knowledgeable runners I joined a bigger running club where I was introduced to structured sessions and learnt about the importance of building a solid base and the many different types of sessions you can run to improve speed at different distances.Â
I have been fortunate to meet and become friends with some great athletes over the last few years. It started with my friend Tom and our 6:30am KM reps in the dark at the local park to being introduced to John, we do most of our longer Sunday runs together in the beautiful Clumber Forest, these have been critical in my development and he is great to be around as his positive, inspiring attitude is infectious. My track training has recently been raised to a new level as I train with Sam Harrison, we put each other through big 400m reps and she drags me around 1km and mile reps. I have recently moved to Mansfield Harriers where I am continuing my development with top athletes and coaches, I am part of the team that became the Midland Masters 6 stage relay champions.
